My mother told me a story about a time I played a prank on her. I was 3 years old. She took me out shopping. While she was browsing some clothes, I disappeared. She was devastated. She looked for me everywhere and had the store broadcast my name. It might have been a couple of hours of searching in vain until she noticed a pair of tiny feet underneath a giant coat on a mannequin - I was hiding inside the coat the whole time, sweating and giggling. It was funny for me but a nightmare for my mom.

There are always stories about kids go missing due to various reasons. Parents shouldn't be overprotective but in public areas they need to keep kids in sight. Tracking devices exist. But can we create some interactive behaviors that can be more effective?

Kitty's Flower is a pair of Bluetooth wearable brooches. Jointly created by Art by Physicist and DFRobot, they are specially designed for wearable application scenarios, integrated power management system, RGB LED lights, accelerometer, sensors, vibration, and touch. Support Arduino and Scratch programming, and can be used as the core intelligent control unit for wearable products, interactive art installations, and new accessories. Two are matched as a pair, and various effects can be programmed by users. The factory-set functions are programmed for the above-mentioned scenario. In addition to being ideal for decoration and interaction, they are perfect for educational purposes for users who want to learn programming.    

Companion brooches match the Flower outfit (topshorts and mask cover) with hand digital painting on fabric and 3D printed flowers on tulle.

Care Instructions

Can I wash tech-fashion?

Short answer: yes. The products are designed with washing in consideration. Follow the instructions, just like how you'd do so for cleaning other types of clothing. 

The electronic components are made either removable or concealed, or the clothes itself only requires spot washing.

Think about normal clothes you are used to. They also require different kinds of washing - machine wash, hot/cold, hand wash, spot wash, dry wash, no need to wash, etc. Tech wearables do not add more complexity if user experience is already considered in the products. Think about how you'd care for a leather jacket or wool.

Even if the electronics are waterproof, the batteries should be removed. There may be more mechanical damages by the washing machine than water damage if instructions are not followed.

Is embedded electronics sold at Art by Physicist safe?

Yes. The electronics only use or produce 3-5V. They are safer than a phone, all things considered. 
For products that are not waterproof, do not wear them directly in the rain or completely soak in sweat, to avoid shorting and damaging the circuits. 
Do the colors on digitally printed fabrics wash off or go faint?
No. The colors are robust against extensive washing and sunburn.
How do I determine which size to order?
Please compare your measurements against the size chart. For made-to-measure items, your measurements will be collected after the order and we will make the clothing to your measurements. We simulate the digital outfit with your measurements in software and custom create the physical outfit for you.

Shipping & Returns

We ship both domestically and internationally! 

We offer free shipping for any order above $120.

For smaller orders:

We have a flat shipping rate of $5.00 for shipping to Germany. We have a flat shipping rate of $15 for shipping within Europe. For all other international orders, we have a flat shipping rate of $50.00.

For 3D printed products and electronic circuit boards, we have a flat shipping rate of $5.

 

Returns 
Our policy lasts 15 days. If 15 days have gone by since your purchase, unfortunately we can’t offer you a refund or exchange.

To be eligible for a return, your item must be unused and in the same condition that you received it. It must also be in the original packaging.

Several types of goods are exempt from being returned. Perishable goods such as food, flowers, newspapers or magazines cannot be returned. We also do not accept products that are intimate or sanitary goods, hazardous materials, or flammable liquids or gases.

To complete your return, we require a receipt or proof of purchase.

Please do not send your purchase back to the manufacturer.

There are certain situations where only partial refunds are granted (if applicable) 
Book with obvious signs of use 
CD, DVD, VHS tape, software, video game, cassette tape, or vinyl record that has been opened 
Any item not in its original condition, is damaged or missing parts for reasons not due to our error 
Any item that is returned more than 30 days after delivery

Refunds (if applicable) 
Once your return is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned item. We will also notify you of the approval or rejection of your refund. 
If you are approved, then your refund will be processed, and a credit will automatically be applied to your credit card or original method of payment, within a certain amount of days.

Late or missing refunds (if applicable) 
If you haven’t received a refund yet, first check your bank account again. 
Then contact your credit card company, it may take some time before your refund is officially posted. 
Next contact your bank. There is often some processing time before a refund is posted. 
If you’ve done all of this and you still have not received your refund yet, please contact us at artbyphysicistkittyyeung@gmail.com.

Sale items (if applicable) 
Only regular priced items may be refunded, unfortunately sale items cannot be refunded.

Exchanges (if applicable) 
We only replace items if they are defective or damaged. If you need to exchange it for the same item, send us an email at info@kittyyeung.com

Gifts 
If the item was marked as a gift when purchased and shipped directly to you, you’ll receive a gift credit for the value of your return. Once the returned item is received, a gift certificate will be mailed to you.

If the item wasn’t marked as a gift when purchased, or the gift giver had the order shipped to themselves to give to you later, we will send a refund to the gift giver and they will find out about your return.

Shipping 
To return your product, send us an email at info@kittyyeung.com with the receipt attached to obtain shipping address.

You will be responsible for paying for your own shipping costs for returning your item. Shipping costs are non-refundable. If you receive a refund, the cost of return shipping will be deducted from your refund.

Depending on where you live, the time it may take for your exchanged product to reach you, may vary.

If you are shipping an item over $75, you should consider using a trackable shipping service or purchasing shipping insurance. We don’t guarantee that we will receive your returned item.

"smart" flower

Those flowers are very beautiful. Because of its simple but elegant design, I feel they could match all my outfits and accessories. I do not have much engineer background, but it is not difficult to figure out the battery connection and other functions of those "smart" flowers.

Lots of fun to hack with

We had lots of fun with the Flower brooches. It was also an opportunity to do some coding on Arduino. Thanks for putting together the Hack projects in Hackster. Really helpful.
To receive 2 brooches is great as there can be lots of other fab applications. We love the fact the brooches can vibrate, make sound, have neopixels and have the capacitive touch!

Beautiful, versatile platform for wearables

I've been working on a platform for "mind-altering gadgets" for years, and this is the first self-contained, finished-looking platform I've found that has all the sensors and actuators I want built right in! It's exciting to see how easy it suddenly is, following the DFRobot wiki page to get started programming these brooches with Arduino code. It's like Kitty took all the most useful wearable-tech components and put them on one beautiful, adaptable platform. The initial program is already cool, and I can't wait to delve deeper. :)

More than just a decorative brooch

When I shared these with my daughters they helped me to continue an approach to STEM with their interest in wearables. We loved the shape and looking at them outside they remained very bright in strong sunlight. We played with the Bluetooth connection between them and moved various distances and kept track of when they seemed to trigger and vibrate. My youngest daughter insisted on wearing one to her art class and it seemed perfectly appropriate to share something beautiful and functional in that context. I hope to continue to help my daughters understand how they work and explore how the hardware and coding interact.
